Top 10 upsets in World Cup history
Up on the tenth spot is the North Korean’s upset over Italy way back in the 1966 World Cup held in England. The North Korean team was regarded as the “Mystery Men.” However, the North Koreans made a statement that they are a team that shouldn’t be underestimated as they beat Italy with a final score of 1-0.
On the ninth spot is the U.S. team beating the English team in the 1950 World Cup. The U.S. team was composed of mailmen and teachers making them the under dogs of the team. The English team was then beaten by the only goal made by Joe Gaetjens. Although the team went home with all the glory, their achievement was not much recognized as the underdog squad flew back to U.S.
On the eighth spot is the West Germany upset over the Hungarian team way back in the 1954 World Cup held in Switzerland. Germany was still fresh out of the Second World War and for them it was an emotional tournament as people disrespected them because of their World War II stunts. Nonetheless, Germany got their redemption as they beat the Hungarian squad with a final score of 3-2.
On the seventh spot is the upset of South Korea over the Italy in the 2002 World Cup co-hosted by Japan and the underdog team. There were no great expectations for the South Korean squad although they were under the legendary Coach Dutchman Guus Hiddink. The underdog squad rallied up to the semi-finals. But one of the highlights of their run was the major upset over Italy resulting to a final score of 2-1.
Northern Ireland’s upset over the Spaniard squad is on the sixth spot as Northern Ireland defeat the Spaniards in their home court in the 1982 World Cup. Former midfielder Tommy Cassidy told the Lancashire Telegraph “At the final whistle, we didn’t initially celebrate. We just looked at each other for about 10 seconds in amazement. We couldn’t believe what we’d done. We had beaten Spain in their backyard. It was unthinkable.”
On the fifth spot is the Senegal upset over France in the 2002 World Cup. The French squad looked confident against the Senegal squad as they recently defeated the Brazilians in the 1998 World Cup. However the Senegal spoiled the party for the French squad as they defeat them 1-0.
On the fourth spot is the Cameroon victory over Argentina. It was the year where Argentinean Diego Maradona dominated the field. But the Cameroon squad contained Maradona’s dominance as they beat the latter’s team by 1-0.
The third spot belongs to Iran as they handed a major setback for the favored United States team in the 1998 World Cup in France. The less favored Iranians beat the American 2-1.
The second spot belongs to Peru as they defeated the much favored Scotland team way back in 1978 World Cup in Argentina. The less favored Peru outscored the talented and favored Scotland to a score of 3-1.
The biggest upset in World Cup history would be the Uruguay upset over the host of the 1950 World Cup, Brazil. Uruguay was on hostile grounds as they face the Brazilian squad and a whole arena of Brazilian fans. The Uruguay squad still defeated the odds as they out-goaled the Brazilians 2-1.
